March 2024

Hello March

Monthly Bulletin

Happy March Friends,

Stay strong. Spring will be here before we know it!

Have any of your bulbs started coming up yet?

SEND ME PHOTOS!!

What I've Learned Recently

  • Apparently, you can take the tea leaves from a Chamomile tea bag, spread and plant them as they almost always contain seeds. I am DEFINETLY going to try this!
  • I recently discovered that Charlie Dobbin is the host of a show called "Healing Gardens" on VisionTV. Season 2 is coming April 2024 but you can see Season 1 videos HERE
  • Have you heard of "Hugelkultur" before? I've read about them before but rediscovered them this month. Perhaps I'll try building one this year.
  • I love collecting rocks on the beach and I just discovered that some of them glow under a black light. COOL!

What to do in Your Garden this Month

  • Contact your Landscape Designer and/or Contractor NOW! Many landscaping companies are already booked for this season. Reach out to try and get in for 2024. In Ontario, you can search for a professional in your area through the Landscape Ontario website HERE.
  • Start those indoor seeds! The last frost date according to the Almanac is May 15th HOWEVER, I usually go by June 1st as the first day to safely plant outside just to be safe. This week of March 3-9 is 13 weeks until the last frost.

Some seeds that you can start indoors in March include:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Catnip
  • Chamomile
  • Chives
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Thyme
  • Asters
  • Marigolds
  • Poppies
  • Snapdragons
  • Sweet Peas
  • Violas

Important Garden and/or Plant-related News

  • I am teaching a Spring Floral Centerpiece Workshop at the Steel Wheel Brewery in Brantford on March 29th (just in time for Easter!). There are limited seats left (only four I think). Secure your spot HERE
  • Did you know that the Hardiness Zones are being updated this year? The U.S. has already updated their hardiness zones to keep up with the changing temperatures due to climate change. The Canadian Hardiness Zone Map is expected to updated this year. You can read more about it HERE

My Landscape Artist Issue #13 Jan 2025 Hello January! Monthly-ish Bulletin Winter Gardening Happy January Friends and Happy New Year! Have you set any goals for yourself this year? Personally, I like to set an intention for the year by choosing a word or phrase to focus on. In 2020 my word was "Metamorphosis". In 2021 it was "What would Wonder Woman Do?". In 2022 it was "Progress not Perfection". In 2023 it was "Gratitude" and last year it was "Dare to be Different". THIS YEAR, I've chosen...
